I can still remember finding my first rocks and crystals as a child, and although I am now an adult, I still enjoy the thrill and excitement of finding and collecting stones. This fascination with rocks has become a large collection of absolutely stunning and rare items, like agatized dinosaur bone, petrified wood, beautiful opals, and even fulgurites, which form when lightning hits Earth an fuses the local minerals in an intense flash of electricity. I never could have imagined how geology and rockhounding would teach me so much about the wonderful world of nature.
I share this interest and love for rocks with my parents, who have taught me so much along the way. Some of my first discoveries were while walking along the river and finding pieces of petrified wood. Or going to the mountains and digging for smoky quartz crystals, which form in the cracks and crevices of pegmatites caused by volcanic activity. Another time we found some really nice blue barite crystals in the dusty badlands of endless gray clay, it looked like cat litter, as far as you could see! What I've learned is, you never know what is around the corner.
What else I've learned, is that Earth is an awesome and amazing place. While our modern world has become super advanced and complex, with computers and cell phones and spaceships... Earth is still simple, and natural. Earth is in a continual process of motion and change, which is separate from the worldly distractions of technology, progress, and time. Crystals, rocks, fossils, petrified wood, nature, Earth, can remind us of that other time- where time itself does not even matter. After all, humans have more in common with dinosaurs, then we do with robots and computers.
